Bob Hope's airport

Bob Hope never lived in Burbank, Glendale or Pasadena -- the cities that own Burbank Airport -- but they have renamed the airport for him anyway. The Times story says the family received the honor with "dead silence..." You have to wonder if the name will catch on. John Wayne did on Orange County's airport, but at least he had lived there for awhile. Erik Himmelsbach, meanwhile, wrote a disapproving column on the Hope legacy in the Valley in CityBeat a couple of weeks ago.

Taluca Lake is not in Burbank?

Posted by: john krill at December 11, 2003 11:33 AM

Actually no. Toluca Lake is just another semi-official L.A. suburban community like Van Nuys or Canoga Park. Interesting website John.

But their "house" is close enough to the takeoff path to hear almost every takeoff from BUR.

It is a fine honor for an outstanding man.

I think we're both right. I copied the below statement from the C og C web site for Toluca lake.

Its productive groves have long given way to beautiful streets of fine homes and estates.
Toluca Lake, a community within two communities, North Hollywood and Burbank, had its inception 76 years ago through efforts of a syndicate of Hollywood financiers and developers who named the development Toluca Lake Park.

I grew up in burbank and was always told Toluca lake was part of Burbank. Oh well, live and learn.

Thanks for your comments about the web site. did you visit "another vietnam story"?

Toluca Lake has always had kind of a divided mentality. The famous "Toluca Lake Bob's Big Boy" is actually just over the line in Burbank, for example. But most of the business district and homes (and almost all of the hidden lake and Lakeside Country Club) are in L.A. The original TL development was all in L.A., but a developer in the 30s began building the Toluca Wood neighborhood in Burbank. They've kind of gotten merged in people's minds.

Have just begun looking around the site.

Part of Toluca Lake is actually in the city of Burbank. The dividing point is Clybourn St. If you're going down Riverside Dr. and you turn left on Clybourn, you will be on the border of two cities. The left side of Clybourn St. is Burbank. The right side of Clybourn is Los Angeles. Yes, Bob Hope lived a couple of blocks to the right--in Los Angeles.
Those who live on the Burbank side consider themselves Toluca Lake residents, too.
