Gov. Schwarzenegger has dropped his private probe into the groping charges against him, which Dan Weintraub says makes sense -- "nobody understood what the investigators would be looking for...and if the investigation had cleared him, no one would have taken it seriously." Stories in the Times, Chronicle, Mercury and Bee. Meanwhile, Hollywood stuntwoman Rhonda Miller, one of the accusers, yesterday filed suit (with the help of Gloria Allred) over the Arnold campaign erroneously spreading the gossip that she had a criminal record. Weintraub comments on that too.
Of course it makes sense for Schwarzenegger to drop an investigation of himself. But not for any reasons his people spot.
It was a sham, it's not as if he would publicize anything damaging. And a self-exoneration isn't believable.

You know, Pete Wilson had a reputation for tough campaigning, but I don't think that his campaign staff intentionally tried to mislead reporters about the reputations of the governor's critics...
And I don't recall the Wilson press office EVER attempting to imply a critic had a criminal record ... perhaps I missed it.
The depositions in this case should make for interesting reading.
