Just came back from Silver Lake where a strange coppery glint in the hills caught my eye. The mystery beacon was sunlight reflecting off the shined-up skin on the dome of the Griffith Observatory. As part of the renovation, new copper panels are being added and the dull, matte verdigris finish on the old panels cleaned.

They're going to have to restore it, but they are preserving the area pretty much intact. The restoration includes excavating the whole lawn in front of the site, and then restoring this area to the way it was. The renovated Observatory will have nearly the exact same footprint, but will double its sq ft. with all the underground construction.

I hope someone has given thought to preserving the scene of the heroic knife fight with James Dean in Rebel Without a Cause. This is what history means in L.A. after all (where "old" just means before Technicolor.)
