Where's Gretchen Carr?

KCBS Channel 2 is misleading the L.A. Times about the status of former anchor Gretchen Carr, says Ron Fineman. The paper reported the station claims Carr has been off the air recovering from a broken foot. Fineman has been reporting for weeks that Carr, to the contrary, was essentially fired and has cleared out her desk. She's also been taken off the station website, he says. According to Fineman, she got bumped in the reshuffle when new anchor Paul Magers arrived from Minneapolis.

To Gretchen, you are my all-time favorite news anchor.
I told CBS-2 via e-mail that not having you there anymore was a "horrific programing mistake", and that "the party is over" with that news station, though I'll continue to watch because I'm a long time fan of some of your former contemporaries there.
You Gretchen, however will be very much missed by this and countless other So Cal viewrs for now on whenever I watch on the TV news the latest bad news in the world, and also that beautiful smile of yours whenever you'd be reporting of some lighthearted and or good news.

Posted by: Joseph M. at January 20, 2004 08:28 PM

I love Gretchen Carr! Why is she not around anymore on CBS 2? Please bring her back.

Posted by: Mark at January 21, 2004 12:52 PM

Hey Mark.....Gretchen Carr isn't around anymore at CBS-2 because of a decision from management formed from what appears to be SHEER INsanity that it would be better to bring in this Paul Majors guy and get rid of the BEST thing that's ever happened to that news channels' anchor team (Gretchen Carr).
I read somewhere that she still has 2 years to go on her contract with them, and that she will still be paid, but I don't know how true that is. I HOPE it's true, because that's the LEAST that they can do for her!

Posted by: Joseph M. at January 21, 2004 04:37 PM

I will not watch the channel 2 news as much as I used to! What a mistake they made in letting Gretchen go. Gretchen Carr you are the BEST!! & I will miss you :(

Posted by: Dan D. at January 23, 2004 07:53 PM

HEY! THE ONLY REASON I WATCHED THE CHANNEL 2 NEWS, WAS BECAUSE OF GRETCHEN CARR! NEVER SAW HER MAKE A MISTAKE, TOTAL PROFESSIONAL, AND FINE AS WINE WITH A BRAIN TO MATCH. ANY AVERAGE L.A. GUY WOULD AGREE...

I am just now finding out why Gretchen has been missing from cbs news. I am upset and I won't watch their news programing in the future, and I suspect when the story gets out there will be many more like me. She is intelligent, well spoken, and attractive - in short, everything you want in a news anchor. Bad move guys!!!

Posted by: Gary S at January 26, 2004 06:16 PM

Dearest Gretchen, You are our favorite anchor. My husband and i always watched CBS 2 news because of you. He has a big crush on you and said you were and are still the best. All we can say is you will definitely be missed more than you know. It's inconceivable to us as how they could let such a bright, beautiful, and smart anchor go. Their loss!! We wish you much luck and happiness wherever your future takes you. Take care and God Bless

Posted by: Rosie at January 27, 2004 11:38 PM

Gretchen, you have been missed by myself as well as many others. You should stay in LA and join eitber KNBC or KCBS as an anchor if you can. I wish you well and look forward to your return.

Jim W

Posted by: Jim W at January 28, 2004 06:19 PM

That would be the ULTIMATE payback to KCBS if Gretchen were to join either KABC or KNBC in L.A.! I guarantee there would be a ratings ratio slide unparelled favoring over to whichever of the two stations mentioned above that Gretchen would join!

Posted by: Joseph M. at January 29, 2004 03:51 PM

Gretchen,
I remember that you gave me 3 emails and one of them was when I asked about that Gideeup and Go thing that you did. And I emailed Thelma Gutierrez about it. You are a fantastic woman, and I know that it's rough on you getting fired from CBS 2. Thanks alot for those those 3 emails that you responded. I'll pray for you.

Gretchen:

I used to look forward to KCBS news when you were on it. Now the news format has irritatingly increase the commercial time which makes KCBS's news a waste of time. You might consider changing your last name to something more minority-sounding, dyeing your hair darker, and/or becoming Asian or Hispanic. Just a thought.

Posted by: Gregytech at February 10, 2004 12:33 PM

Gretchen Carr was far better than any other anchor at CBS - too good for them I guess! She can do better than CBS anyway. I can't believe they would lose their best anchor.

Posted by: Teresa at February 11, 2004 07:59 PM

My Dearest Gretchen, i remember seeing you and talking with you at the susan c. race for cure afair! I had no idea that would be one of the last times i would see you on the news channel! Im shocked and tehy made a horricfic move! You are hard working well deserving! Get those allergy shots come and join the race horse team report for Tvg! They would love to have you! I hardly wacth the news any more. I knew you were going to have sugery again. Love ya always Toni.

This is my 4th posting here, because there is just so much I wanna say about this young woman!
In addition to having been CBS-2 New's best anchor all across the board, Miss Carr would also volunteer her time for community/charity activities, thus being a very positive community representer of CBS-2 to the public in the process!!
I've also read in her bio that in her free time she likes to pursue outdoor activities that "involve fun and adventure" like skydiving, and many other gutsy activities that I myself would'nt have the nerve to do! :)
Getting back to her anchoring.....it was always so nice to relax at the end of a long day at work by pouring one, and watch Gretchen deliver my daily quota of news with that ultra charm, grace, and style.

Posted by: Joseph M. at February 14, 2004 08:35 AM

Since I am from out of town I don't know anything about Gretchen Carr. By the looks of these posts she must have been very good. It is sad when your favorite news anchor leaves, I know, I am from Minneapolis. My wife and I watched Paul Majors for almost 20 years on KARE-11 (NBC). We miss him very much. We are going through the same emotions that you people are here in the LA area. I don't know anything about what happened with Gretchen Carr but I do know that if you give Paul Majors a chance you will enjoy him very much, we did for 20 years. Trust me, you will be pleased.

I was extremely disappointed to not see Gretchen Carr on the news. I watched her from the time she was a "roving reporter" to her sitting behind the anchor's desk. She was the best part of KCBS news; a real pro with a whole lot of charisma. Aside from that, she had an extremely perfessional demeanor and attitude. To find she was let go was disillusioning. To quote a line from the film, "Pretty Woman", "Big mistake, Big, Big mistake."

Posted by: Alex at February 21, 2004 11:46 AM

I watch the news to stay informed, I watched CBS news only because of an anchor named Gretchen Carr. Her smile cannot be replaced by anyone and I no longer have a favorite news channel. In fact I'll stop watching CBS out of protest. To CBS; never underestimate the power of a beautiful woman to bring viewers to your station. I used to tune in even when I didn't especially want to watch the news just to see her special smile. I don't know why she is off your newscast but I would advise you to get her back if possible. A woman like her just can't be replaced... To Gretchen..Come back to the public eye.!! Somewhere in L.A. please!!... We need your Light to keep shining.. We love the glow... Tim Adams.

Posted by: Tim Adams at February 25, 2004 01:08 PM

Gretchen,
You are still my favorite newscaster, I still remember when I gave that Christmas email to you and you said:

You too Paul.
Thanks.
Gretchen

That was your signature saying right there. Close to, "Thanks for writing".

Paul

Posted by: Paul at February 25, 2004 07:42 PM

We'll miss Gretchen, CBS really blew it.

I guess I won't be tuning in anymore. See, B.S.

Posted by: Greg at February 25, 2004 08:16 PM

I don't understand it. Gretchen was very interesting. KCBS news really started to go downhill when they brought Laura Diaz in (she's too concerned angling her face to show her 'good side'), then Paul Majars (there's something very strange about that guy) and now they have the typical, no personality paper cut-out blond, Suzanne Rico.

There was something unique about Gretchen and I hope she comes back!

I loved waking-up at 5:00am to train for a marathon and watching Gretchen Carr deliver the morning news on Channel 5 in Salt Lake City. She made it easier for me to answer the alarm clock! As handsome as she was on the air, she looked even better in person when she was involved in community events there. I was soo bummed when she left. Image my great surprise to see her anchoring the afternoon news in LA when we moved here over three yeaars ago. I was truly happy for her success. Every single time I watched the news in LA I always went to CBS to see if Gretchen was working. That was the main factor in what news I watched. If she wasn't sitting behind the desk, I felt no loyalty to any station at all. They all kind-of blend into dirty-laundry mush without her. I am truly sorry she is gone!

Posted by: ken at February 27, 2004 05:07 PM

For the last couple years, the only for me to tune in to kcbs evening news was gorgeous Gretchen Carr at the co-anchors desk.
Shame..Shame On kcbs. If their ratings fallen in the toilet, it shouldn`t come as any suprise...

Posted by: Brad at March 5, 2004 10:37 AM

Bring back the most beautifull thing on CBS. I know about the news because of Gretchen, how can you take away the best thing that CBS will ever have. She's one in a millon and her smile is even more priceless than any on television. The news is no longer the same without that face and smile, bring her back please. Don't ruin CBS.

Posted by: Guillermo Franco at March 5, 2004 01:01 PM

After moving to Southern California I began watching the 11pm news on KCBS largely due to anchor Gretchen Carr; she is a rare combination of beauty and strength...After returning to CA after the holidays I noticed Gretchen was gone from the airwaves and recently noticed the KCBS
billboard on Sunset had been changed. We miss you Gretchen and look forward to seeing you again real soon!

Posted by: John at March 16, 2004 10:31 PM

Gretchen,

I stopped watchting the 11 o'clock news when you left, it was a good thing to watch before enjoying Letterman. I always thought that you were national TV material. I hope you get a job with one of the major national network or cable TV so that everyone can enjoy your profissional work, and make people at CBS2 envy!!

Good luck and all the very best..

Posted by: Khalid at March 18, 2004 09:55 AM

Gretchen,
You are the greatest. You are the only reason I watched Channel 2 News. I hope to find you soon on another channel. I have stopped watching Channel 2. I wish the best where ever you go.

Posted by: Dave Bushmire at March 20, 2004 07:45 PM

Gretchen,

I'm so sorry to see that you have left KCBS. You are such a professional and given your brains and beauty, you will land something even better, preferably here in L.A. or nationally. I have switched to KNBC and judging by these e-mails, I am not alone. KCBS really screwed up. I wish you the best of luck.

P.S. You and Jonathan Elias were a great team. Where is he now?

Posted by: Jon Jay at March 22, 2004 01:41 AM

Hey Jon:

Joseph here. In writing a fan letter message to KCBS last year regarding Gretchen, I happened to asked about Jonathan Elias, and I was told that he accepted a job at KCBS's affiliate in Utah. That was about a year ago, so he's probably still there.
Yeah, he was definitely a cool anchor dude that was paired with Gretchen.

Posted by: Joseph at March 22, 2004 04:40 PM

Hi gretchen:
your news delivery was always articulate and professional, aside from that, you are, from my point of view, the most beautiful woman on television, movies, and stage. there is no comparison, you stand alone. i live in bandon oregon and watched kcbs on dish network, but not anymore. i hope to find you with another newsnetwork soon; like msnbc. you were and will always remain as my favorite person to find out what is going on on this planet. hope you are well and that there is an intelligent company out there who can see what a big lift to their ratings you would make.
sincerely

Channel 2 does it again...no more Gretchen Carr? I guess CBS 2 wants to stay in last place. Bring her back.

Posted by: Chris at April 2, 2004 03:28 PM

I miss Gretchen. I heard that CBS didn't treat her well when she was there. SHAME on CBS for that! I hope to see her on ABC 7 or Fox 11 since I watch those stations more anyway.

Posted by: Mike at April 5, 2004 02:20 PM

Mike,

Paul here. I understand how you feel. But Gretchen got canned from KCBS 2. Mike, I remember that newswoman emailed me 3 time in one year. I still got this quote in my head: "Thanks for writing" and "You too, Paul. Thanks.", and that's all Gretchen.

Paul

Hey Gretchen,

You are my favorite news
anchor. Since you've left I
no longer watch CBS at 4
and 6, Please if consider
staying in LA, if you've not
left yet. ABC7 needs another good female anchor. There are too many
of us in LA who are Gretchen Carr fans. We all miss YOU in LA. :(

Posted by: Nick at April 15, 2004 05:10 PM

HOLY COW!!! Just as a fluke I wanted to see if I could find a bio on her, and just Googled my way here. THEY FIRED HER!!??? Are they flippin' HIGH??? Gretchen Carr may very well be in my eyes THE single most beautiful woman in the world...much less the best anchor since the beginning of time. Gretchen--do ALL of us a favor (if you're even reading this), and get over to KTLA morning news and take over for that sorry excuse for an anchor...uhhh...what's her name? Not Sharon Tay...that goofnut. Pereira? yeah...HER!! You are the BEST Gretchen!!!

Posted by: Ryan H. Turner at April 22, 2004 11:17 PM

I used to watch (and have a crush on) Gretchen Carr when she was an anchor at KSL-TV in Salt Lake City. I always thought she was amazing (both personally and professionally) and knew she'd hit the big time. We were of course saddened when she left our little town but seeing her in a Discovery Channel program the other day was a nice treat. It was like hearing that an old friend was doing well. She is unbelievably beautiful and has an allure, a sort of perfection - she turns us men into helpless creatures, frozen and staring at our TVs every second she's on. It was shocking to follow up and learn about how her new employers treated her! Sons-a-bitches! I don't know the mechanics or politics of the L.A. news market but to the man who made the decision to fire her, sir, you are an idiot. You will undoubtedly regret your decision someday. And she will bounce back and become more successful than she could've ever become at a third-place local station (even if it's in L.A.) I wish nothing but the best for her!
Good Luck Gretchen!!!

Posted by: John Bergstrom at April 23, 2004 02:19 PM

Hey John Bergstrom:

If you happen to see this message here......WHAT Discover Channel program was Gretchen on??
Did it OR Gretchen happen to mention what and when her next broadcasting gig would be??

Posted by: Joseph at April 23, 2004 05:18 PM

Just in case anyone is wondering, you don't need to worry much about Gretchen. Don't get me wrong, I don't think I have ever met a person who would appreciate your concerns more... its just that this girl knows what she wants and I guarantee you this isn't her first bump in the road! There is something about her that is not only genuine and sweet, but impressively determined as well. I always liked that about her... she's a quiet dynamo! Watch out... she has great close friends, a very supportive family and best of all... besides a gentle humility and great personality, she never, I mean NEVER gives up! I've always liked that about her in our world of so many who choose what is easy. I know she always tries to choose what she thinks is best despite how difficult 'best' may be. Her loyalty is unique, her humility sublime, her passion is inspirational and her dedication par excellence... all that wrapped up in quite a package with smarts? Now that's what you call "one of a kind", and someone ALWAYS needs a "one of a kind" kinda gal. You Rock Gretch... go get em! Oh yeah... and drop a line one a these days when you come up for a breath of air.

Posted by: Chad Sayers at April 23, 2004 10:26 PM

Joseph:
The show I saw was called "Breaking News" on Discovery/Times channel. I'm not sure when it's on again - maybe you could check out their website. In the show she was being interviewed and said she'd only been in her L.A. job 4 months, so I assume the program was filmed awhile back - '98 or '99 I think.

Posted by: john bergstrom at April 24, 2004 01:39 PM

Um, anyone stop to think that Gretchen has a personal life, like a family? From what I hear, she is doing just fine, with husband and all the wonderful things that a growing family brings...

Posted by: Terry Yutzy at April 27, 2004 07:53 AM

Of course we all know that Gretchen has a "personal life", and I could'nt be any happier for her that she's doing what she wants to do in regards to raising a family, but that does'nt mean that we all can't discuss her career, or that we can't all applaud when she makes her return to television, whenever that happens to be.

Posted by: Joseph at April 28, 2004 04:55 PM

No offense to both anchorwomen, both are absolutely the top professionals in the industry, but when it comes to looks GC blows everybody away.

I watched you here in Salt Lake City and was sad when you left. I became happy one day when I was visiting my parents in Palm Springs, Ca. and found you had become a CBS anchor in LA. I wish you the best of luck in you future endeavors. I hope to find out where you will be working next so I may again fly to that city to enjoy your news casts.

Good luck always.
