The top story at the Hollywood Reporter is the mixed message surrounding Saturday's Writers Guild of America awards at the Century Plaza. While writers are being feted, dissident members upset with the guild's practices and the ascension of new president Charles Holland will be there in force. The lede of the piece by Peter Kiefer has Robert Stitzel planning to gather signatures on a recall petition at the soiree.
And there is this:
If the Internet is any indicator, the petition appears to be gaining steam after former board member and screenwriter Roger Simon criticized Holland last week on his weblog, saying he would support the recall. Simon's posting was then linked to by another widely read Los Angeles weblog, LA Observed.
Thanks to Eric for the pointer.
Great take, Brian. Simon's gonna be pissed though.

Posted by: Rodger Jacobs at February 21, 2004 08:54 PMWhile I loved Lost in Translation, Sophia won for being Sophia. That wasn't a, uh, meaty, screenplay. You should be more heartened by American Splendor's win.
Posted by: rachelc at February 22, 2004 10:08 AMI was very pleased to hear about the win for "American Splendor". And as far as Roger Simon is concerned, I ecourage his wrangling in WGA politics ... anything to keep him from producing another Moses Wine novel.

I cannot help but continually envision this WGA saga as a bad TNT movie, with Blair Underwood as Holland, Barbara Hershey as Victoria Riskind and Jason Alexander as Roger Simon. And dang, this weekend's gala affair would sure make a great scene in the middle of Act 2.
