Blog stuff

Comments and new postings were blocked for most of today (Monday) by my web hosting service, Lunarpages. They are back on now. Lunarpages is unhappy with Movable Type, the software that L.A. Observed and many other bloggers use, but apologized for rashly shutting down this site without advance notice. I've found a new host that works closely with Movable Type, and is cheaper with more features, and will be moving the site there. (Thanks to everybody for the great suggestions!) If the transition goes smoothly, you won't even notice. I'll let you know who the new host is once things are working there.

Blogging may also be lighter (and maybe bumpier) this week because I'll be traveling to Gainesville to participate as a panelist in the Symposium on Converged Journalism at the University of Florida. JD Lasica, Sheila Lennon, Jennifer Balderama, Mark Glaser and Elizabeth Spiers are among the online journos who are participating.

Why doesn't Lunarpages like Movable Type? Is this something that other MT bloggers may face in the future? And what's this new host you've decided on?

Do tell. LAVoice.org is (at the moment) happily parked at Lunarpages, along with an MT-based personal blog.

Lunarpages said on its help forums a few weeks ago it wouldn't let any new MT users on its servers, but will let those already on keep using the MT scripts for now. Lunarpages feels the MT scripts are too easily hacked and that MT eats up server resources. When I went shopping yesterday I found a couple of other hosts who shy away from MT.

But I figure I'm too far down the road with Movable Type to bail out, so I went with the host that many of the MT support people use (Total Choice Hosting). It comes highly recommended by the Movable Tupe cult, and the host's owners apparently have their own MT blogs. So it feels secure to me. It's also a tad cheaper than Lunarpages, with higher storage and bandwidth limits. We'll see how setup goes.

What do you like best about using Moveable Type for your site vs. other software, or web based systems, like Journalspace.com?

These comments are the way we get to know each other.

That's why it's such a fine thing when they're unavailable.

I too am on Lunarpages/Moveable Type, and though I haven't experienced popup difficulties, my hits tracking software has been unavailable for two days.
