The baseball season just began today and the Dodgers can't even lose their first game until Monday. But Sports by Brooks reports that Long Beach Press-Telegram columnist Doug Krikorian already called on his radio talk show for new owner Frank McCourt and general manager Paul DePodesta to be hung in effigy. DePodesta, by the way, was on Dennis Miller's show on CNBC earlier this week. Mercifully, a dreadful hockey season in L.A. shrugs to an end on Sunday.
duh, of course. thanks.
Posted by: Kevin Roderick at March 30, 2004 11:33 PMIs there some particular reason why Doug Krikorian is deserving of our respect of his sports knowledge? Is there something I've missed in his past. His knowledge of baseball pretty much came from whatever crumbs the egregiously horrible Kevin Malone would toss toward him. He was skewered in SI by Michael Lewis when Lewis pointed out that it was he (Lewis) and not Billy Beane who wrote "Moneyball".
Krikorian gives hard-drinking, brown-nosing sports columnists a bad name.
Posted by: Bob Timmermann at March 31, 2004 12:22 AMI haven't read Krikorian's column in a long time (I don't live in Long Beach) or hear his show very much, but when I worked with him back at the late, great LA Herald Examiner, Doug's writing was some of the best in the sports section. I can't believe he's suddenly gotten stupid of lost a feel for LA sports now that he's on the radio...
Posted by: John Hollon at March 31, 2004 06:35 AMWith Krikorian, it's more a case where he knows the sports scene because he's pals with people. If someone isn't his friend, like a newcomer like DePodesta, Krikorian can't figure him out and, by extension, must not be very good at his job.
Krikorian was one of Kevin Malone's biggest supporters, but I could never tell if was defending Malone because he thought Malone did a good job (which would be hard to prove) or because Malone would appear on his radio show.
Posted by: Bob Timmermann at March 31, 2004 07:19 AMFrankly the Dodgers are going to be horrible this year and a lot of that blame will solely fall to the owners. Deservedly.
In the meantime we have the Lakers to keep LA dominant in at least one aspect of sports...
As for Doug...he's a lot more level headed on the radio show in comparison to Joe McDonald...
Posted by: Christopher at March 31, 2004 08:14 AMHave you ever tried to parse a sentence that Krikorian utters out loud? He can indeed write very well, but he just seems to be stammering nonsensically.
And while I don't think the Dodgers are going to be having a great 2004 season, I don't think DePodesta is to blame for the problems. He knows that the NL West is weak and it's probably better to bide his time and see how the season plays out before mortgaging the future so the Dodgers can get three good months out of some guy like Paul Konerko.
Guys like Krikorian, and to a lesser extent Plaschke, think that teams like the Dodgers have to be good because of divine right instead of through planning.
Posted by: Bob Timmermann at March 31, 2004 11:36 AMAnd lose Monday, they will. And I'll be there to enjoy every minute of it.
