A reader emails that Hal Fishman's commentary on tonight's KTLA "News at Ten" defended Sharon Tay, who was the subject of that "Are Anchors Too Hot?" story in today's Times. His piece is archived in print on the Channel 5 website.

I disagree: I think women have come so far in tv news that they are not judged by the blouse they wear. If I want to go to a woman who is a top surgeon in her field, it doesn't make any difference to me if she posed provocatively or dresses with cleavage revealed. All I care about is her credentials to perform the surgery.

And that is the core of the issue. Do you know the credentials of the person bringing you the news - female or male?
