For reasons unknown, the Daily News likes to hype ordinary traffic congestion as gridlock (pronounced Gridlock!) It's worst in the headlines. Lisa Mascaro doesn't use the term in her story today about the traffic diversions sure to result from the closing of one block of Owensmouth Avenue in the Valley to do some road work. Then the headline writer took over: Warner Center gridlock.
DN management trains its scribes to look at Valley residents as a bunch of lab rats hooked up to a battery, and each day's headline is supposed to be like an electric charge. It was obvious to me this was not a sane way to go about running a newspaper in the 21st century, but they're in love with themselves for it.
Posted by: dzzrt Ratt at May 7, 2004 08:44 AMThese complaints about the Daily News treating the Valley. How does the LA Times (and Throwaway) treat the Valley? Like the ugly stepsister.
On its website for stories under "The Valley" heading - the LAT&T includes stories from Riverside and Little Tokyo. Not exactly Sherman Oaks or Chatsworth!
Posted by: GregB at May 7, 2004 02:46 PMHell, the Times treats all of Los Angeles as an ugly stepsister...to NYC, Chicago, wherever. The only reason they got a Pulitzer for local news was that the fires were too big for them to ignore.

A negative Daily News front-pager that didn't find a way to blame DWP or LAUSD? Somebody is slacking off over there...
Seriously, this story is actually front-page worthy as it will directly affect a lot of Valley residents. I do agree though that "gridlock" is a poor choice of words.
