Another L.A. institution has been sold. Du-par's coffee shops, which began in 1938 at the Farmers Market, were purchased by the family that used to run the Tiny Naylor's restaurants. A Times website story says the Du-par's at Farmers Market will close for 60 days of renovation then reopen under the same name. The Studio City and Thousand Oaks locations will close briefly in August for remodeling.
Hooray for cleaning up Dupars. I don't know about the new owners' long-term plans, but a thorough scrub down of the Farmers Market location is due. Applause.
Posted by: Hello Kitty at June 24, 2004 09:05 AMI implore anyone who has not had dupar's french toast to go get some, right now, and as many times as you can before the chain is devoured. It is, in my opinion, the best french toast anywhere, ever, period.
Posted by: nancy at June 24, 2004 10:41 AMThe 'cakes at Kokomo are way better, IMHO. But with two incredible pancake joints on the same strip, that little corner of Los Angeles just might be the griddle capital of the world.
Posted by: joseph at June 24, 2004 12:07 PMAgree with joseph. There's a "multi-grain" hot cake at kokomo's (I forget what they call it exactly) that is quite remarkable.
My Dupar's favorite is their macaroni and cheese (now proscribed, unfortunately, by my cardiologist!).
Posted by: Tim McGarry at June 24, 2004 02:23 PMI hate to think Du-par's has gone decades without a good cleaning. But by the looks of the place, it's possible...
Posted by: Kevin Roderick at June 24, 2004 09:21 PMDu-par's was the only joint at the Farmers Market that got a C from the health department several months ago.

That's sad.
