My friends at Los Angeles magazine gathered up nine awards — more than any other publication — at the City and Regional Magazine Association competition announced earlier this week in Chicago. Texas Monthly and Boston won eight awards each. The Los Angeles winners were:

General criticism: Gold and bronze.
Personality profile: Gold for "Master of Illusion."
Excellence in writing: Silver for February issue.
Feature design: Gold for "The Rising."
Designer of the year: Gold for Joe Kimberling.
Excellence in design: Bronze for October issue.
Leisure/Lifestyle Interests: Silver for "25 Best Beaches," bronze for "The Garden Issue."
