History

In the weekend email

El Rey logo• The website of the city-landmark El Rey Theatre on Wilshire's Miracle Mile has a page of photos out of the past, showing both the interior and (more interesting to me) street scenes out front from 1946, 1954 and 1962.
• The Silver Lake Downhill Derby is targeting June 2005 for a gravity powered race starting near Landa Street and Redcliff, inspired in part by the Echo Park Soap Box Derby.
• Porn Valley has a new trade pub, from Xbiz.com: the monthly Xbiz World.
• The L.A. Press Club is throwing a book party on Election Eve (Nov. 1) for All the President's Spin, by Ben Fritz, Bryan Keefer and Brendan Nyan of Spinsanity.org. It's at Nic's Martini Lounge in Beverly Hills.
• Ilsa Setziol of KPCC won an outstanding beat reporting award from the Society of Environmental Journalists for her pieces on the Colorado River, fire aftermath and other stories.
• Deanne Stillman writes in The Chronicle of the Horse that President Bush's policy toward wild horses violates the Texas cowboy Ten Commandments.
• Someone emailed to point out that the Metropolitan News-Enterprise website has been down all weekend. [* It's back up on Monday]
