L.A. boxing icon dies

Jimmy McLarnin, apparently one of the great boxers to live and fight in Los Angeles, died back on Oct. 28 at age 96. He was known as "Baby Face" and "The Jew Killer" after turning pro in 1923 and becoming the welterweight champ in the 1930s. He retired to Glendale and became a familiar figure around the local boxing scene. The New York Times ran a staff-written obit today. The L.A. Times had a News Wire item in Sports on Nov. 2, and the L.A. Daily News ran a brief on Sunday. Boxing websites have been all over it.
