The National Weather Service has issued a "hazardous weather outlook" advisory, and the Daily News publishes a chart of safety tips in today's paper. The NWS web page predicting 109 degrees for the West Valley has some good news too: Temps should drop all the way to 70 tonight.

Fun with L.A. geography: While it's 109 degrees at the west end of the city in Woodland Hills and Chatsworth, here are some extreme differentials in the forecast:

Downtown 93° -16 degrees
Westwood 91° -18 degrees
Pacific Palisades 89° -20 degrees
Venice Beach 78° -31 degrees
San Pedro 77° -32 degrees

Looked at another way, today's high temperature just on Sepulveda Boulevard alone will vary about thirty degrees.

* Sunday was worse: 110 degrees in Chatsworth, a new record.
