Slate: Today's Papers
♦ The Daily Journal's lede has imprisoned PI Anthony Pellicano deciding to defend himself if he is charged with wiretapping by the feds. He's due to get out of prison Feb. 4.
♦ City Council roundup: Guerdon Stuckey gets applause but no decision, no new EIR for Playa Vista, and Tutor-Saliba gets to rebuild the south runway at LAX despite questions. The biggest news is that the meeting started on time; the Daily News also has some insight on the new lineup of committees.
♦ County police are ruffling feathers by issuing a lot of $114 jaywalking tickets outside the courthouse downtown. Lawyers caught in the dragnet are screaming foul, and one is suing.
♦ Mayor Villaraigosa at 11:30 am will announce the new homeless estimate that is in the LAT (88,000 in the county) and at 2:30 unveils a new partner in the Convention Center hotel project.
♦ Murders in the sheriff's part of the county rose 15% last year. It's not all due to Compton.
♦ Boeing will pay $30 million to settle lawsuits over pollution at the Rocketdyne facility in the West Valley. (Daily News, Times)
♦ The not-quite-family feud roiling In-N-Out is heating up.
♦ Pee Wee, an African lion that was a mascot of sorts for the Wildlife WayStation in the Angeles National Forest above Lake View Terrace, was euthanized after breaking a hind leg during an epileptic seizure.
♦ Brentwood magazine, founded eleven years ago by Phillip Troy Linger, is now owned by Discover Publishing, Inc.
♦ Rich Lederer of The Baseball Analysts blog is getting credit for helping push former Angel Bert Blyleven closer to the Hall of Fame. Blyleven, more qualified than many pitchers already elected, surpassed 50% for the first time in this week's vote results.
♦ Kobe only scores 41 as the Lakers lose. Guess the guy's no good.
♦ Former Dodger Milton Bradley is seeking a divorce from his wife of eleven months and joint custody of their three-week-old son—and he wants to pay no spousal support.
