BorgnineTalk about a career. Ernest Borgnine's first film credit came in 1951 as Hu Chang in China Corsair. He has portrayed J. Edgar Hoover, Angelo Dundee, Vince Lombardi, Marty Piletti (Oscar for Best Actor, 1955), Lt. Cmdr. Quinton McHale and, more recently, the voice of Mermaid Man on "SpongeBob SquarePants." He's now 89, but IMDb lists Borgnine as involved in five projects this year. Today Thursday at lunch he's being feted as a Treasure of Los Angeles, along with UCLA Chancellor Albert Carnesale, jazz legend Buddy Collette, designer Kevan Hall, LAPD Medal of Valor winner Mario Cardona and Candy Spelling. The Central City Association is also honoring Disneyland, Verbum Dei High School, the LAMP Community and James A. Thomas, the president, chairman and CEO of Thomas Properties Group. Dick Van Dyke emcees the event at the Bonaventure downtown. [They made a change: Council President Eric Garcetti has been subbed in as the master of ceremonies.]
