This was posted recently at a Yahoo! group for freelancers:

LA Weekly has started a new outdoors/adventure travel advertorial section.

It's evolved into a weekly three or four page color section called OUT THERE. We will run a feature story, a hiking column and outdoor gear column and an events listing. Check out this week's, which is out today.

We're trying to make this a bit more of an iconoclastic section covering human-powered adventures in the outdoors, not the usual hook and bullet good-old-boy hunting and fishing you see in other newspaper outdoor sections. We'll also cover enviro stories as they relate to outdoor recreation.

I'm the contract editor and I'm looking for 650 word features on hiking, adventure travel, kayaking and other adventures. So if you have a story about swimming with wild dolphins in Hawaii, catching the perfect wave at Mondo's, getting lost in Borneo, getting a terminally sore butt riding your first century, etc., please send me a short pitch.

It really helps if you can supply a photo with features. Pay starts at $165 for the article and $50 ea. for photos.

Please contact me off list at [email address redacted] with pitches and for more information about writing for the section.

LA Weekly is also looking for a special section paid intern to help with OUT THERE, LA to Vegas section and other advertorial projects. Contact Jane Dalea-Kahn [email address redacted] for information about intern position only.

Bill Becher is the contact for the adventure pieces.
