Unable to conclude the search for a chancellor at UCLA, the University of California today said that professor emeritus of law Norman Abrams will become acting chancellor. Abrams has been a member of the UCLA Law faculty since 1959 and has served in a number of administrative positions. UC release.

* Also at UCLA today: Leaders of the NAACP, Los Angeles Urban League, Brotherhood Crusade, Southern Christian Leadership Conference of Los Angeles and Community Call to Action Accountability gathered on campus to protest the low rate of African American enrollment for the fall. Says they: "The low levels of acceptance and enrollment of African Americans at UCLA are the consequence of institutional racism practiced by both the UC Board of Regents and UCLA, a lack of commitment by UCLA to equal opportunity and access, and the misguided utilization of Proposition 209, which has become an excuse for systemic extinction of a minority population on the UCLA campus."
