With the Willowbrook hospital failing its "make or break" inspection, closure appears imminent. The feds plan to stop all funding, UCLA says it will pull its medical students, and the state began looking for other hospital hospital beds in the area. "Potential beginning of a disaster" in terms of local health services, says an official of a nearby hospital. The county Board of Supervisors met in emergency session to plan a response.
Joe Francis pleads guilty
He appears in federal court to accept a plea deal over poor record-keeping for the "Girls Gone Wild" videos and apparently has a brief chat with old friend Claire Hoffman from the Times.
Grand Avenue park
The initial concept for the first phase of the Civic Park on Bunker Hill got the approval of the Grand Avenue Authority.
Pasadena growth
Mixed-use residential along Colorado Blvd. and a large urban village planned for the Ambassador College site have some residents complaining that the town's character is changing. Latest landmark destined to go: Rick's Drive-in, which is asking for help to find a new home.

The Huffington Post will launch a new site devoted to satire in November, according to Radar Online. Ben Wikler, a former Al Franken collaborator, will edit.
Bratton aide to leave
LAPD Deputy Chief Michael Berkow will become chief of the Savannah-Chatham department in Georgia. He heads the Professional Standards Bureau.
Neighborhood council questions
Gwen Vuchsas, president of the Westchester-Playa del Rey council, resigned amid questions about some funds steered to her business.
Tribune shares dip

Redwood's return
The redesigned Redwood Bar & Grill has reopened across from the Times at 316 W. 2nd St. The society of Professional Journalists plans to gather there at 6:30 pm and hear from LAPL librarian (and Herald Examiner alum) Glen Creason about the history of downtown dives.
