Friday desk-clearing

  • The team headed by San Francisco-based Hargreaves Associates was selected to design the Los Angeles State Historic Park on the 32-acre site near Chinatown sometimes called The Cornfield.
  • The Sausage Factory is the new name for the Daily News politics blog. Last entry was Nov. 12, which is OK since it mentions LA Observed (though doesn't link to us!)
  • Doug Dutton, owner of Dutton's Bookstore in Brentwood, told Patt Morrison on KPCC that he won't stock O.J. Simpson's new book. Meanwhile, former National Enquirer staffer (and Simpson case witness) Pablo Fenjves has been identified as the book's ghost writer.
  • UCLA students protest over the repeat Tasering of student Mostafa Tabatabainejad.
  • Jennifer Deleon was found guilty of first-degree murder in those killings of two yacht owners who were thrown overboard alive.
  • Universal Music sues MySpace over copyright infringement.
  • Three hundred SEIU janitors at LAX have authorized a strike, possibly during the Thanksgiving travel period.
  • The Muslim American Society and the West Angeles Church of God in Christ have cancelled events at the LAX Hilton and called for a boycott by faith organizations in a dispute over the living wage vote and labor relations.
  • Campanile chef/owner Mark Peel and Jonathan Gold of the LA Weekly guest on "Good Food" Saturday at 11 am on KCRW.

And finally...

  • LA Observed contributor Jenny Price has an op-ed piece in today's New York Times on the birth, rise and demise of the plastic pink flamingo.
  • New LA Observed blogger Bill Boyarsky has a piece in the Jewish Journal on the biases of L.A. Times journalists: "Because of their education, background and leadership, too many reporters fail to dig into the many facets of Southland life. Most reporters and editors are secularists in an area where religion is important to so many. Most are far from the immigrant experience in a Southland filled with immigrants. Most are well educated and seek the company of the same kind of people."
