  • U.S. District Judge Jeremy Fogel in San Jose barred further executions in California, saying the state procedure for lethal injection "lacks both reliability and transparency."
  • Superior Court Judge Dzintra Janavs sounded skeptical of the legal rationale for giving Mayor Villaraigosa (or anyone) full authority over some LAUSD schools. She basically asked what would stop the Legislature from handing schools over to LAPD chief Bill Bratton or DA Steve Cooley, the Times' Howard Blume reports.   • The plaintiffs have signed off on that $60 million settlement over sexual abuse with the Los Angeles Archdiocese.
