There's already been an item today about David Geffen and the L.A. Times, but this is about his home on Carbon Beach in Malibu. The mogul goes to the Coastal Commission next week seeking "after-the-fact" approval for a seawall, fences, beachfront deck and private access stairs to the beach that was the scene of a lengthy fight over public access. Last year, Geffen finally capitulated and let the public use an easement across his property — 22 years after he first said that he would. As part of this latest project, he proposes to improve the public's walkway, allow public use of his private sand above the mean high tide line and donate $125,000 to the California Coastal Conservancy for upkeep of the public walk. Coastal Commission staff recommends approving most of the project, but urges denial of the private stairs and some other elements. I hear the subscriber-only Capitol Morning Report plans an item on it Monday.
