Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa heard boos when he stepped to the microphone at today's media debut of new Galaxy member David Beckham in Carson. It really came through on TV, and I'm told the mayor looked taken aback by the reception. City News Service calls it "a notable round of boos."

Villaraigosa also was the butt of jokes from Jay Leno again during the monologue on last night's "Tonight Show."

We have a very special crowd here tonight. Every single member of our audience has had an affair with an elected official. How about that?

Boy, there are a lot of sex scandals in the news this week. It's unbelievable. Our own mayor here in Los Angeles, has admitted to having an affair with a very young, very attractive reporter from the Spanish language network...whose job it was to cover him. She was supposed to cover him. Talk about being an embedded reporter. Man! Takes on a whole new meaning.

But I guess the mayor got some good news today. He got a big endorsement from "In 'n Out."

And on the Republican side, the darling of the religious right, conservative senator David Vitter of Louisiana, has not only admitted to having sex with prostitutes, he would pay them $300 to make him wear diapers. Today that crazy astronaut, called him "my dream guy. He's got my vote. Where have you been?"

Today, Vitter put out a statement say that he only started to cheat on his wife after he began hanging out with the wrong crowd-you know, Giuliani, Newt Gingrich, the mayor of L.A.

Jay's writers are enjoying the Summer of Adultery, a term I use on this afternoon's LA Observed commentary on KCRW. It airs at 4:44 pm and is actually about William Randolph Hearst and Marion Davies — now that was an affair.

* Video update: Breitbart.tv has footage of the mayor in Carson. Sounds more like jeers and catcalls than boos. Sure, politicians usually get a rude reaction when they butt in at sporting events, but when I was on the field at Dodger Stadium with Villaraigosa last year I heard nothing but enthusiasm. That was then, this is now.

Galaxy fan Bob Ramsey explains via email: "I was at the Beckham intro this morning, and the catcalls were pretty fierce. Some of it, I'm sure, is from some of his um, recent notoriety. But there is also a soccer-specific reason for this. Villaraigosa has been very publicly identified with Chivas USA, including wearing their shirt the first time the Galaxy played Chivas at the HDC with Chivas as the home team.... Supporting Chivas is much more unforgivable than adultery."
