Ingmar Bergman, director was 89

Bergman, one of the greatest directors in motion picture history, died on the Swedish island of Faro. Nine Oscar nominations, but no statue. NYT obituary, IMDB bio

Also: Tom Snyder, who had a run as the star news anchor on Channel 4 in the 1970s before going network and into his talk show phase. Snyder was 71 and died from complications of leukemia. AP
