The city of Santa Monica website says that Katz, a member of the City Council, died today with family and close friends by his side.

The family appreciates everyone’s prayers and condolences and requests privacy at this time. Once funeral arrangements are made details will be released.

It is with a heavy heart that we mourn the loss of Herb Katz, one of Santa Monica’s great leaders and friends. Herb distinguished himself in his personal, professional and public life. He will be greatly missed.

Matt Mason at L.A. Metblogs has a personal post remembering Katz as the president of RTK Architects.
