Channel 4's Jennifer Bjorklund went to high school in the Bay Area with one of the four Oakland police officers killed in that shootout with a parolee. I'm told her blog item about John Hege is the NBC4 site's most-read story. Excerpt:

Oakland Police officer John Hege's heart is beating for someone else this morning, as the city plans to mourn him, and three other officers, killed in the line of duty last weekend. His mother says his lungs couldn't be transplanted because of the bullet wounds, but his kidneys and liver and heart gave four men another reason, this week, to be grateful to him.

Hege's heart went to a 73-year old man. His right kidney went to a 56-year old man. The left, went to a 42-year old man, and his liver went to a 56-year old man. The Transplant network says all the surgeries were done Tuesday night and Wednesday morning, and all were successful.

I'd mention other recent blogs by talent at the station, but it's impossible to find them on the website.

Over at Channel 2: Kent Shocknek has a comment about the proposal to ban black cars by the California Air Resources Board.

As newspapers and television pull back from investigative reporting, foundations and other organizations are beginning to fill the void. One of the most interesting is Accountable California, a project of Local 721 of the Service Employees International Union.
