  • President Obama nominated federal appeals judge Sonia Sotomayor to the Souter opening on the U.S. Supreme Court. NYT, NPR
  • The California Supreme Court will announce its decisions on appeals regarding the legality of Proposition 8 and the marriages of same-sex couples already performed. Stormy reaction is expected either way. Last May the court ruled that the state Constitution protects a fundamental "right to marry" that extends to same-sex couples. LAT, NYT, AP, Press-Telegram
