  • With one day to go In the CD 2 runoff, the talk is all of the massive campaign spending, especially by labor — notably the DWP union and the Police Protective League — on behalf of Chris Essel.     Plus: "Winning a council seat means a 12-year gig on the highest-profile city council in America. The compensation's not bad either; council members get paid a $178,000 salary, not including perks and pension, and automatic raises regardless of the economic state of the city or how well they do their jobs."   • If Krekorian wins, Glendale businessman Sundar Ramani has been endorsed as his replacement in the state Assembly by the Committee of 100, a group of community leaders and activists within the 43rd District. Rick Orlov/DN
  • The Episcopal Diocese of Los Angeles on Saturday elected Rev. Canon Mary D. Glasspool as the first openly gay bishop since the national church lifted a ban. The move is pending confirmation and drew a rebuke from the Archbishop of Canterbury. LAT
