  • The art world was surprised by the resignation of Getty Museum director Michael Brand, while current and former Getty officials pointed to a personality clash between Brand and CEO John Wood and differences over a strategic vision that Wood proposed and the Getty adopted in 2008.   • Gay Democrat John Perez of Los Angeles was formally elected to be the next speaker of the state Assembly. Sacto Bee
  • Charles Johnson of Little Green Footballs talks about the threats he's gotten from former fans on the political right since his break from them: "The kinds of hate mail and the kinds of attacks I am getting from the right wing are way beyond anything I got when I was criticizing the left or even radical Islam."   • The LA Weekly portrays the ouster of CRA chief Cecilia Estolano as a case where "Villaraigosa and his boys pushed out the one woman who topped them all." LA Weekly
  • The city will have a training academy for gang intervention workers, run by the Advancement Project, "a legal advocacy, civil rights and public policy group," and funded with $200,000 in federal grants. LAT, DN, LA Weekly
  • District Attorney Steve Cooley will likely find out next week whether the U.S. Supreme Court will hear his claim that he should have immunity in a retaliation lawsuit filed by a deputy prosecutor in his office. In 2005, Deputy District Attorney David S. Eng filed a lawsuit against Cooley and other officials for violating his First Amendment rights in a long-running feud. Daily Journal (no link)
  • The state Office of the Inspector General is launching a probe of inmate treatment at the California Institution for Men in Chino, after reported that inmates were held outdoors for days at a time because of the prison’s lack of bed space. KPCC News
  • Prosecutors have charged former Democratic assemblyman Walter Karabian with misdemeanor assault for allegedly running into a parking attendant with his car last month during a USC football game. LAT
  • Stats aside, comparing the nature of L.A. crime today to the 1950s is "a silly comparison," says the LA Weekly.
  • Virtually all communities in California now have an abundance of H1N1 vaccine, the state health officer said Thursday. LAT
