Abby Sunderland reaches La Reunion *

Sailor Abby Sunderland arrived on the French island of Reunion a few minutes ago. She was greeted by her brother Zac then met the media briefly before the two teenagers begin the long trip back to Southern California. Abby's blog says she'll hold a press conference here on Tuesday.

* Abby speaks: She went live on TV from the port at La Reunion at 10:08 p.m. "The past three months have been the best months of my life," she said. She thanked the people of Reunion island and the French and Australian governments, plus her support team and her family. Criticism of her parents was "unfair and offensive," she said. The U.S. consul in the region was on hand, plus a media swarm that looked to be at least a dozen strong. At home in Thousand Oaks, the Sunderlands' mother has gone into labor, Channel 2 says.

Funky geography: Paul Magers on Channel 2 referred to Reunion being in the Pacific Ocean. It's the Indian Ocean, off the east coast of Africa, much closer to the Atlantic than to the Pacific.
