Downtown

Here's the toll the morning after

For a few hours after the Lakers win, scattered small groups vandalized and looted in Downtown Los Angeles and to a lesser degree in East L.A. At least 38 were arrested, an LAPD officer and a sheriff's deputy were hurt, an unknown number of others were injured, three vehicle fires were set, and some shops and restaurants had their windows broken or stuff stolen. Of the arrests, 15 were for felonies. The LAFD said it handled 19 small street fires within a half-mile radius of Staples Center and 18 medical aid requests, and took eight people to hospitals. The Times story says that a crowd tried to pull a Metro bus drive out a window at 7th and Flower streets. In a few cases officers fired non-lethal rounds to disperse crowds.
