Kings lose out on big free agent they craved

Big-time scorer Ilya Kovalchuk is going back to the New Jersey Devils, spurning a lengthy courtship by the Los Angeles Kings. "NJ offered more money. Simple as that," Kings boss Tim Leiweke told the LAT's Helene Elliott. Which is a little weird since the Devils are at the NHL's salary cap and the Kings aren't.
