Mayor has surgery on broken elbow *

A day after breaking his right elbow in a bike fall, Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa went over to Santa Monica UCLA Medical Center on Sunday for surgery on his injured wing. Presumably it was outpatient surgery, but the Times item didn't say. Villaraigosa was treated and released at UCLA last night after the mishap, which his office blamed on a taxi that stopped abruptly while the mayor was riding in the bike lane on Venice Boulevard just above Culver City. (It was in front of 8627 Venice, the LAPD says.) His security detail was reportedly with him, but nobody got any information on the taxi. The Villaraigosa Twitter account chirped two hours ago:

Got out of surgery a couple hours ago, and I'm going to be fine. Thanks again everyone for the great support! I really appreciate it.

"Mayor Villaraigosa will make every effort to resume a full schedule this week," spokeswoman Sarah Hamilton said in a statement. So I guess we'll see whether that means he misses the kick-off media event for Lu Parker's new animal project scheduled for Monday.

* Update: The mayor does plan to attend Parker's event, his office says.
