  • Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger is expected to nominate Tani Cantil-Sakauye, a Republican appellate court justice with a reputation as a moderate, to be chief justice of the California Supreme Court. It would give the court a female majority for the first time. Bee, LAT
  • Nathaniel Ayers, the Downtown street musician portrayed in "The Soloist," begins a trip to visit the White House later this month. Wave Newspapers
  • Carly Fiorina changed her mind and told a a San Francisco radio show she would have voted yes on the unemployment benefits extension bill that Republicans opposed in the Senate. Register
  • Republican state Sen. Roy Ashburn disavowed his earlier opposition to gay rights legislation. LAT

  • A criminal probe into whether Los Angeles County Probation Department managers improperly steered millions of dollars in contracts to specific companies has expanded to include a second major vendor. LAT

  • A man found stabbed in the Trousdale Estates area was the third homicide victim in Beverly Hills since January 2007. LAT
  • A maintenance worker at the Sepulveda Basin Dog Park mowed over about 50 small lawn chairs, strewing debris over the grass where dogs run. DN
  • Lindsay Lohan is projected to serve 13 or 14 days of her 90-day sentence, the sheriff's department says. LAT
  • ABC will air a Diane Sawyer interview with Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg on tonight's "World News Tonight" and on "Nightline." THR

  • The National Hockey League rejected Ilya Kovalchuk's contract with the New Jersey Devils, so in theory the star might be available again to the Kings. TSN
  • A Noise Within broke ground in East Pasadena on a new home for the classical repertory theatre company, at Foothill Boulevard and Sierra Madre Villa.
  • Up north, the Bay Area might be experiencing its coolest summer in 40 years (and that is saying something.) San Jose Mercury News
