LAFD warns of risk from Nowruz celebrations

lafd-persian.jpgAhead of the vernal equinox and the Persian celebration of Nowruz, the L.A. Fire Department blog has posted a reminder about possible dangers. "While we are pleased to see cultural values expressed through a safe and always attended flame in a fireplace, barbecue or approved firepit, there is one practice associated with the Suri Festival and Nowruz that has proven to have dire consequences in Los Angeles," the blog says. "Last year, six persons sustained burn injuries that were serious enough to summon LAFD Paramedics. Attempting to jump over fire and/or hot coals, the celebrants sustained severe burn injuries that were painful, disfiguring and placed senseless burden on their loved ones and our health care system."

The department posting is also up as a Google translation into Persian.
