Bob Dylan at Hollywood Bowl, 1965 *

dylan-hwd-bowl.jpgThe Hollywood Bowl is celebrating its 90th year by posting a Twitter-sized nugget from the archives on the web each day. They started counting backwards at 90 and today reached #25: the night in 1967 when Simon and Garfunkel and The Lovin’ Spoonful performed. With Bob Dylan marking his 70th birthday this month, here was yesterday's entry. It says Dylan made his Bowl debut on Sept. 3, 1965, with Joan Baez as the opening act.

The show, on September 3, was right at the beginning of his controversial “electric” period, although according to most the audience at the Bowl was much more receptive to his plugged-in sound than had been audiences earlier on the tour. He had a little something for everyone, though, as he played the first part of his set acoustic and the second half electric, closing with “Like a Rolling Stone.”

* Noted: Longtime L.A. music writer Richard Cromelin says that Dylan debuted at the Bowl two years earlier, on Oct. 9, 1963, as the opener for Baez.
