Los Angeles magazine gearing up for its 50th birthday

lamag-611.jpgI guess things are looking up financially for Los Angeles magazine, after winning a couple of National Magazine Awards last month. Owner Jeff Smulyan of Emmis Communications is coming to town for a June 15 (invitation-only) party in the lobby of the 5900 Wilshire building, to celebrate the magazine's 50th year. Chef John Sedlar of Rivera and Playa is said to be planning an L.A.-themed menu that borrows from Chasen's chili, El Cholo's tortilla soup, Chinois' Chinese chicken salad, Pink's hot dogs and the vodka salmon from the late, still-missed-by-some Scandia. Future Los Angeles covers as envisioned by artists such as Gronk and Jim Heimann will be featured, and guests will be offered the chance to opine on the question "Dystopia or Utopia?: Los Angeles in 2061."

Related social note: Former Los Angeles editor Kit Rachlis married former Bon Appetit editor Amy Albert in April.
