Media memo: Patch hires up for new Latino sites

santee-scene.jpgMarcia Parker, Patch.com's West Coast editorial director, sent this note out to the other local Patchies about staffing for the mixed Spanish-English news sites soon to launch in selected communities. (The targeting of Latinos was announced in May.) Included is a hire from La Opinión.

All,

I'd like to welcome Carlos Aviles, Alejandro Lopez de Haro and Adalto Nascimentos to our West Coast team.

Carlos and Alejandro will be launching our first Patch Latino sites in the country, which will be mostly in Spanish with some English. Carlos will be the editor of the Baldwin Park Patch and Alejandro, who was a summer intern in the Bay Area, will be the editor of South Gate Patch.

Carlos has more than a decade of experience. Since 2007 he has been a reporter at La Opinion in Los Angeles, the leading Spanish language paper in California. He has written, edited and coordinated coverage. His reporting experience also includes stints at Hoy Publications in Los Angeles and The Press Enterprise / La Prensa in Riverside. He was born in El Salvador. Carlos has a strong background in investigative
reporting and CAR.

Continued inside.

Alejandro graduated from Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism. While he was there he was a staff writer at www.columbianewsservice.com and at www.thebrooklynink.com, a local news site. He also has experience at the daily Diario Las Américas in Miami. Alejandro has lived in Venezuela, France, the U.S. and a few other countries.

Adalto is the editor of Concord Patch. A graduate of California State University, Sacramento, he has been freelancing for the Sacramento area Patch sites and has served as a guest editor in Concord, where he has family. Adalto worked as the online managing editor and photo editor of the university's student-run newspaper, The State Hornet and prior to that, for Diablo Valley College's The Inquirer. He is also a gifted photographer.

RE Sandra Oshiro will be working with me to get the Patch Latino sites launched. We have one more local editor to hire for Lynwood Patch.

Cheers, Marcia
