Teen couple murdered on street in Wilmington *

streetsc-avalonanaheim-wilm.jpgWhat is going on in Wilmington? Two more street killings, this of a boy and girl on F Street near Bay View Avenue just after 7 p.m. tonight. Reports at the scene say the victims appear to be teenagers. "It's disheartening, disgusting and just uncalled for," Councilman Joe Buscaino said Sunday night as family members came to the scene. They are the seventh and eighth homicides in Wilmington since January 1, the Daily Breeze reports. The LA Times says that "since January 2007, at least 61 homicides have been reported in Wilmington." Times crime reporter Andrew Blankstein posted on Twitter that "before the double homicide in #Wilmington, there hadn't been a shooting there in over 3 weeks."

Wilmington is a community of about 54,000 wedged between the Port of Los Angeles and the city of Long Beach.

Morning update: Both victims were 16, authorities announced.
