jeremiah-mackay-sbsd.jpgMacKay died Tuesday of wounds incurred during the firefight with fugitive ex-cop Christopher Dorner outside a cabin in the 7 Oaks area of the San Bernardino Mountains. He lived in Redlands and was assigned to the Yucaipa station. His name was released today.

"My sincerest condolences go out to the MacKay family," Sheriff John McMahon of San Bernardino County said at a Wednesday press conference. "This is truly another sad day for law enforcement. Our department is grieving from this event. It's just a terrible ordeal for all of us."

MacKay, a 15-year veteran of the department, is survived by his wife, 7-year-old daughter and four-month-old son. The deputy was quoted on Saturday by the Associated Press, talking about the manhunt for Dorner. "This one you just never know if the guy's going to pop out, or where he's going to pop out," MacKay said. "We're hoping this comes to a close without more casualties. The best thing would be for him to give up."
