Traffic advice for Obama's visit on Friday

Thumbnail image for air-force-one-pictures.jpgAs I mentioned earlier, the Obamajam potential for Friday's short visit by President Obama is not too bad. He's coming in mid-morning and leaving early afternoon so the driving disruption should be localized. But it's still Santa Monica, which is always pretty congested in tourist season and especially on Fridays, when the backup to get out of town on the eastbound 10 freeway can start shortly after noon. So be aware.

There's a further complication — graduation day at Santa Monica High School, adjacent to the 4th Street on-ramp to the freeway — but the ceremony doesn't begin until a few hours after Obama is due to leave LAX for his rendezvous in the desert with the president of China. Still, the graduates have been asked to report to school in the morning for rehearsals. The Samohi parent organization says residents have been advised by authorities to avoid these intersections between 9:30 and 11:30 a.m. and again from 1 to 3 p.m.:

  • Centinela Avenue and West Olympic Boulevard
  • West Olympic Boulevard and Cloverfield Boulevard
  • 26th Street and San Vicente Boulevard

Since there are no freeways mentioned, I'll assume this means the president will shuttle to Santa Monica by helicopter. The Democratic Party fundraiser is at the home of Hollywood executive Peter Chernin. Air Force 1 is scheduled to land at LAX after a flight from the Bay Area, where Obama is attending fundraisers tonight and spending the night.
