News about the news *

I can only report, I cannot explain. For that, we'll all have to wait for Kevin's return. Meanwhile, a few items about the local news landscape:

LA Weekly is advertising for a new editor-in-chief on JournalismJobs.com. No word yet about where Sarah Fenske, LA Weekly's editor since Nov. 2011, is headed, or why.

*UPDATE: Fenske is joining Feast Magazine as director of digital content. She'll be leaving LA for St. Louis next month.

The bad and sad news from Aaron Kushner's tenure at the OC Register doesn't seem to stop -- now the LA Times says the OC Reg owes $3.5 million in the failed distribution deal between the two news orgs. Gustavo Arellano has details at the OC Weekly.

Jim Newton is leaving the LA Times for a faculty job at UCLA. From the LAT memo:

After 25 years at The Times – his anniversary was last week -- Jim Newton is leaving to take a job at UCLA. Jim has been a journalist of the first rank, an immensely supportive co-worker, a great friend to many of us, and a role model as well. He’s a doggedly hard worker, an extraordinarily fast writer, a clear and incisive thinker and a stalwart Times partisan.

We all know his resume: He’s been a reporter, bureau chief and editor. He
served as editorial page editor and, most recently, as the paper’s
editor-at-large, writing a weekly column about Los Angeles politics. What’s
truly amazing is that he not only racked up well over 2,000 bylines during
his years at the paper, but also found time, in between, to write
biographies of Earl Warren and Dwight Eisenhower. His third book, written
with former Defense Secretary Leon Panetta, will be published this week.

Andy Hermann is the LA Weekly's new music editor.

And because yours truly is a fan, and because they're breaking instead of making news, a note on KCET's SoCal Connected, which airs segments tomorrow about a push to end homelessness in LA by 2016, bikes vs cars in LA, and artist Sandow Birk.
