Prize season: Journos of the year, LAT and more

The Greater Los Angeles chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists gave out its Distinguished Journalist awards for the year on Thursday: Jacques Clafin, overnight editor at City News Service; Gustavo Arellano, editor of OC Weekly; Keith Goldstein, news director at KCSN; and Cheryl Kunin Fair, vice president and news director at KABC-TV. From the American Society of News Editors, the staff of the LA Times won for breaking news coverage of the Isla Vista shooting rampage. And Times staffers Joe Mozingo and Katie Falkenberg won the Punch Sulzberger Award for Online Storytelling, for "a compelling narrative about a federal undercover operation looking at the illegal sale of Native American artifacts and impact of this investigation on a small Utah town." The National Headline Contest from the American Copy Editors Society: Steve Eames, Mike Davis and Kevin Leung of the LA Times won honors. More details

The American Society of Journalists and Authors: Vince Beiser for "reporting on a significant topic" for a piece in Playboy on the impact of painkillers on a small town, and David Page of TakePart.com for dramatic narrative in a story about disaster relief in the Philippines. More info

The Pulitzer Prizes are announced this year on Monday, April 20.
