Groundbreaking is set today for a $200 million retail center to be built at the corner of Vermont and Manchester in South Los Angeles. It's the site of an indoor swap meet destroyed in the riots which began on this date in 1992. Developer Sassony Properties says Vermont Village will cover two blocks with about 190,000 square feet of retail and entertainment space, with an open air promenade, sitting areas and fountains. Opening is expected in 2016, per CBS LA.

In addition to the start of the riots that followed the acquittal of LAPD officers who beat up Rodney King, April 29 is also the anniversary of the fire that heavily damaged Central Library — and destroyed 200,000 books — in 1986.
