Drew Tewksbury named LA Weekly managing editor

Drew-tewksbury-2016.jpgLA Weekly editor Mara Shalhoup today announced her new managing editor. It's Drew Tewksbury, the managing editor and co-producer of KCET's Artbound and a veteran of other newsrooms around LA. He succeeds Jill Stewart, who left the Weekly to run the election campaign for an anti-growth ballot measure pushed by the AIDS Healthcare Foundation.

Shalhoup's email to the staff today:

After a long search, I'm psyched to announce that we have a new managing editor. Please join me in welcoming Drew Tewksbury to the Weekly!

Drew, a former Weekly contributor, is a natural fit. He comes to us from KCET-TV's Artbound, an online arts publication and Emmy-winning television show covering 11 counties in Southern California, as well as Northern Mexico. As managing editor and co-producer, Drew has run Artbound's editorial side since its inception in 2012, developing, assigning and editing stories from more than 100 contributors. In addition, he assisted in the development of documentary videos based on those stories, which air as part of Artbound's show on KCETLink public media.

Drew also has curated Los Angeles Magazine's Guide section since 2011. And he has written features and radio pieces for NPR, Playboy, Time, Forbes,The L.A. Times, Los Angeles Magazine, KPCC Southern California Public Radio, NME (U.K), Billboard Magazine and Hollywood Reporter, among other publications.

From 2010 to 2013, Drew wrote and voiced bi-monthly, on-air music review segments, New Music Tuesday, which aired on KPCC Southern California Public Radio's "Take Two Show" and "The Madeleine Brand Show." Early in his career, he was a producer for National Public
Radio’s show "News and Notes," a contributing editor at Flaunt Magazine and a daily music blogger for the Weekly for three years.

Drew will bring his keen understanding of multimedia journalism and of L.A.'s diverse landscape to the Weekly, where he will help steer and strategize daily coverage, longform/multimedia features and video.

Drew's first day will be Tuesday, May 31. Drinks to follow.
