Code 3

Joseph Wambaugh thinks sirens are fun, but not everyone agrees...

One of the things that most distinctly separates LA from FLA is the frequent use of sirens. They became the background music of our lives in the neighborhoods surrounding central Hollywood, and now I live in a place where I don't even hear one a day. It is a
huge difference, and so is the absence of helicopter rotors beating the sky to death all night. On my next-to-last LAPD Friday night ride-along, I remember the Lieutenant telling me he thought the Code 2 system (lights, no sirens) was a good one.
