Dropping the Times

Given how many great journalists have left the L.A. Times, as a
longtime lover of print newspapers and a nearly 20-year subscriber, I decided that it's time to live without the print edition. Customer service, however, being what it is, kept me on the phone on hold for 45 minutes repeating "we spend as much time with each customer as possible, so please continue to hold." When a human (?) finally answered, she said in one breath that the servers were down and to go online before she hung-up on me without letting one word escape from my lips. If I was expecting to be talked out of canceling with this call, it didn't work. I'm more resolute than ever.

As newspapers and television pull back from investigative reporting, foundations and other organizations are beginning to fill the void. One of the most interesting is Accountable California, a project of Local 721 of the Service Employees International Union.
