Making sense of L.A. addresses

From UCLA law professor Eugene Volokh at The Volokh Conspiracy:

Recent arrivals to L.A. might like to know this useful mnemonic for figuring out what side of the street a building is on:

SeE NoW

The even numbers are almost always on the South and East sides; the odd numbers are almost always on the North and West.

And the ocean is to the west.

Well, yes and no. Not to get into the whole Reno is further west than L.A. thing, but in a bunch of places around here (including Malibu & Long Beach) the ocean is south.

That rule is true for (most or all of?) L.A. *city*. I believe Santa Monica is the reverse. Some streets' direction might change or be less-than-obvious, for instance is Fletcher EW or NS?

The much shorter & (to me) more memorable version I learned from a census taker years ago is "Even Steven" -- even addresses are are on the East and South sides of streets. This rule is reversed in Santa Monica, as noted above.

Isn't it easier just to look?

It's useful to be able to predict so you can plan your approach to the street in question. Plus as some may have noted, it can be amazingly hard to find visible addresses on many LA streets.
