Old movie newsreels dating as far back as 1917 will be digitized and put up on the Net under a joint project of IBM and the UCLA Film and Television Archive. Some 27 million feet of reels that were shown in theaters and outtakes are in the Hearst Metrotone News Collection.

This is no biggie--there are a number of film archives that have their wares to view on the net. This way, UCLA can cut down on the number of staff researchers they have and on the hours they're open for actual on-site viewing. Just like Getty.
