Roger L. Simon is linking on his blog to the good news -- outside of Switzerland, the best place to be a worker with a Big Mac craving is here in Los Angeles. In L.A. the average worker only needs to toil for 10 minutes to pay for the soppy, underwhelming burger. In Nairobi it would cost three hours' work. Roger recommends In 'n Out anyway, and I'm with him.
And in this other post, he apologizes for scooping Tim Rutten's Saturday column in the L.A. Times, apparently about Hollywood and the recall. It's also a subject Nikki Finke writes about in the current LA Weekly.

FB is the way to go, it's a really really tasty, flavored beef-burger. fat fries are good too.
LA burger ranking:
1. F.O.
2. Fat Burger
3. In N Out
4. Apple Pan
Nonsense. Cassell's (in Mid-Wilshire, near Sixth and Berendo)is still the indisputable hamburger champ.

Posted by: Angry Photog at August 22, 2003 04:53 PMSeems like a ripoff of the Economist's Big Mac Index although they stick to countries not cities.
And as far as burgers go, its Fatburger, then In N Out and the Apple Pan is overrated.
Posted by: Kareem at August 23, 2003 12:02 PMFather's Office on Montana, hands down, for best burger I've eaten in LA. Meredith Brody, former New Times food critic, let the cattle out of the bag on that one.
For fast food, In N Out.
Malibu Inn (the bar side, not the restaurant side) used to have a great sourdough burger and curly fries, but I haven't eaten there for a while.
PS Has anyone ever eaten a turkey burger that doesn't taste like a grilled mound of consolidated dust? Not that I eat them, but I have several culinarily misguided friends who do.
Posted by: Amy Alkon at August 24, 2003 06:09 PMSpeaking of the meager income of journalists, a NY journalist friend (and NYTimes freelancer) recently told me that The New York Times still pays the same rate for freelance that it did in 1979. How does the LA Times rank in the freelancer pay department?
Posted by: Amy Alkon at August 24, 2003 06:13 PMThe newspaper side of the LAT is possibly worse. It wasn't raised while I was an editor, and I doubt has been since. It's one reason the paper is scared of losing freelancers to Distinction of all things, which has higher rates. None of this applies to the LAT Magazine, which pays more like, well, a magazine.
And in burger news, Magic Johnson just sold his ownership of Fatburger, the L.A. Business Journal says.

That is indeed good news, especially considering the notoriously poor diet (and substandard wages) of journalists. However, if you're going to eat a burger at a chain, it's got to be Fatburer, Magic Johnson or no...
